The Norwegians returned to the top of the medal podium in the men’s team sprint at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics Wednesday night. The team of Martin Johnsrud Sundby and Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo finished well ahead of the Olympic Athletes from Russia who took the silver and France who came in for the bronze.
Finland, Russia and Sweden won medals last year with the hope of doing so again in the men’s sprint. With none of them returning to defend, it would be up to the new blood of their countries to get the job done in a six lap switch with 1.4 kilometer laps.
In the first exchange, it was Sweden, Norway and France out front and before the OAR take over on the third lap. It was still a tight race with the pack in sight of one another on the third lap coming into the halfway point. Norway still led and made a push to make some ground on the other competitors with one last switch to go. At the hill, Norway cleared out with a big lead with Sweden, France and the OAR behind by five seconds.
They made the final tag giving them a margin while the three fought for silver and bronze with less a kilometer to go. The OAR was being chased by France with Sweden behind by a couple of lengths. At the finish line, it was Norway winning comfortably with the OAR in second and France taking third with Sweden missing out by a second.
