Broady forces Cornet out of AEGON Classic

Alize Cornet good start turned into a complete downspin at the AEGON Classic Monday. Her attempts to comeback in the opening set resulted in a loss followed by a shutout in the second that gave Naomi Broady the 7-6(3), 6-0 win on Ann Jones Centre Court at Edgbaston Priory Tennis Club in Birmingham.

Neither had history against one another but since the grass court season got underway, Broady has time on the court so far. The British player gained four matches on grass winning three in a row before falling out.  Cornet had only two matches last year which despite winning both, gave the indication that it wasn’t one of her favorite surfaces to play on.

Cornet had an easy start to her match winning the first three games quickly. While her efforts looked all together with her offense it resulted in an early dominance of Broady. She wasn’t able to respond till the fourth where the 27 year old earned her first love service. It seemed to be enough as Broady consolidated it with a solid break on Cornet that brought her within a game. The British contender pulled the big comeback leveling the score at three all to serve Cornet with a very difficult task of being in control.

The French star regrouped to win the next two in order to get some sort of a grip in the set. it wasn’t enough as Broady marched back to even things at five all sending the set deeper. Cornet pulled off an important service hold in the 11th that put pressure on the 27 year old to act accordingly. She delivered a terrific love service on Cornet that sent the two into a critical tiebreaker.

Broady took off with a huge 5-0 run before Cornet got a point. She was having all sorts of problems that led to her picking up just two more before Broady sealed the deal after 52 minutes. Both had a lot of troubles in the set with unforced errors being the key problems. The edge for Broady left her in a good position to dictate as the issues seemed to affect Cornet more than anyone.

The point was proven in the second set as Broady looked to be in comfortable control with her game while something affect Cornet’s actions to return and serve. After three games, and a slip on the court, she wished to see the supervisor to complain about the light and how hard it was to see on the court. Her pleas went unanswered as the match continued on with her 0-4 to the Brit. Broady held her end together in the fifth prior to spots of rain falling on centre court.

It was soon a rush for her to end the match before the chances to suspend it came to play. The final game didn’t come easy for Broady as she fought on deuce but after a break, the 27 year old put Cornet to rest ending the 84 minute run to victory. Broady felt well accomplished to pull out a good opening round and beat the rain before it killed her chance to put the match to bed. She’ll enjoy the solid finish before facing the winner between Tereza Smitkova and returning superstar Petra Kvitova on Wednesday.
